Ajabdeh's Interlude

The soil of Mewar was mesmerisingly bright

In yellow, red, and green.

Giving the eyes a spectacular sight.

As the June rains arrived

Washing the Aravallis in an ocean of beauty,

Beyond the Bhimlat's tranquillity

A fort stood in proximity.

The land of Bijoliya.

Somewhere in the palace, there

Amidst the bloodshed and might

Lived a girl who dared to love,

The bravest the land bore in a long time.

Her days would pass in waiting

And nights rereading letters

He had often sent without being discreet.

Words and feelings between the lines

Her hand traced the curves of each letter

As though she felt his fingers entwined.

Every evening as dusk settled in

Or the rain blurred the horizon in mist

She stood there, on the highest Jharokha

Eyes beyond the plains, far away

Where she could see the silver-lined way.

He would one day come galloping down

The dust gave away his presence in brown.

The people would rejoice at the return of a prince

And her heart would finally find home in him.

He'd meet her in stolen stares,

Seek her out in a crowd as soon as she appears,

Let his hand brush hers where the bruises were

The valiance that made her proud of him

And made the wait worthy of a dream.

And then he would gallop away again

Without a lengthy word exchange

And she would watch from the domes

Till his white horse appeared blue on the horizon.

Once again, she would begin counting days

Till they met each other again.

Jahanara's Longing

The darkness danced in the flickering light,

The music played as the breeze swept by

Dancing around was the water in ripples

And the jasmine cast its aromatic spell.

The moon shone through the clouds that night,

Upon the walls of the magnificent marble

Of the golden-roofed palace

And the red stone fort is in sight.

The Anguri bagh in fresh sown grapes

The wine cups tinkling, poetry going on till late.

Somewhere in the distance, the bells rang

She dipped her quilt in the bottle of ink and began.

A night of longing and of love,

Of feelings bound and desires cursed.

Her soul was restless in search of her heart,

She placed the quill on paper

But didn't know where to start.

The ink blotted the scented papers blue,

Her words were scattered across the sky

Like the veil of stars shimmering bright.

Had her heart travelled far across the land,

Rode on a horseback into his desert homeland?

Followed his soul across the rough terrain

Into the forests of the Aravallis again?

Did he carry her pearls close to his heart,

Or leave it behind in a box, carelessly scattered?

Answers she sought to questions never asked

Only if her mind was as brave as her heart.

The quilt was wet, but with teardrops and muffled screams

The ink lay forgotten, just like her dreams.

The first ray of the sun touched the Taj in crimson red,

Reminding her of vermillion and blood,

One for life, another for death

One that took him away,

Another that cursed her to stay.
